Many reptile owners worry about Salmonella
and other bacteria. With this kit and cleaning methods, you can
drop your worries!
Must have's for your kit:
- Latex Gloves (or other house cleaing
gloves) - make sure that they are new, free
of holes, and bacteria resistant.
- 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate Concentrated
Solution - Can be bought at most feed stores
and veterinary supply stores. Must be diluted prior to use
- 1 Gallon Jug (empty milk jug)
- Mix 3 tablespoons of Chlorexidine solution
and fill the jug the rest of the way with water. Be sure to Label
this jug so that you always know what's in it.
- 1 Liter Spray bottle (free of
chemicals) - fill spray bottle with contents
of disinfectant from the gallon jug. Be sure to Label the spray
bottle "disinfectant".
- Of course, paper towels and a
trash bag.
Take the reptile out of it's cage.
Put on gloves and take the hide box, water dish, and all cage ornaments
out of the cage. Use a dust pan or gather the substrate with you
hands and dispose of it in the trash bag. Spray down the cage with
the disinfectant and let sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, wipe
the cage dry with the paper towels (still using gloves). Once the
cage is clean and dry, remove your gloves and wash your hands up
to your elbows.
Replenish cage with fresh substrate
and, after cleaning, return water dish, hide box, and cage ornaments.
You may return the reptile to it's habitat.
*This takes time and can
be easily done while you are feeding your reptile in a separate
container.
