Every reptile owner
should have a first aid kit available for their reptile. If you're
not entirely sure how or why to use these products, please feel
free to email your questions to bonita@reptilerope.org
Here's what should be in the kit followed by it's uses:
- Mineral Oil & Cotton
Swabs -
For a shed aid and eye cap removal.
- Betadine or other Povidone
Iodine - For cleaning open wounds.
For example, nose rub, blisters, or scale rot.
- Neosporin or Triple
antibiotic -
For nose rubs and other abrasions.
- Biotene or other non-burning
medicated mouthwash -
Experiemental treatment of mouth rot. Be sure to use moderate
amounts of non diluted Biotene on effected areas frequently. Will
NOT work on severe cases of mouth rot!
- Nail Clippers and Cornstarch
(for
Iguanas and other lizards with long, sharp nails)
- Clippers to keep nails trimmed and cornstarch to stop bleeding
if clipped a little too close.
- Provent-a-mite or Black
Knight - Mite
killer. Be sure to use as directed. These chemicals are very strong
and can kill your reptile. However, they are still the most recommend
methods of killing mites. Most store bought mite killer does not
work as fast or as well as the two brands listed.
